In the spirit of our Black & White business card promotion (see News, or our Facebook page, or our BigCartel store….), we’re showing off another project that uses black ink and white paper to maximum effect. Ladies and gentlemen, Vertical Carnival….

The detail in Allison Rae’s work is breathtaking. Every square inch of space is like a fully-conceived character in a sweeping epic novel. There is no line, no single dot, that isn’t fully deliberate.

Vertical Carnival is the third print we’ve had the privilege of producing for Allison. Her first, Vertical Cities, was featured in Fingerprint 2, and was an amazing labor of love, as she recreated in Illustrator what was originally a pen-and-ink drawing.

She later revised Vertical Cities, adding even more obsessively rendered patterning, and this, along with Vertical Carnival, are for sale in her Etsy store, signed and numbered.

We love a good cocktail, which tastes even better when it’s for a good cause! We recently collaborated with long-time friend and client Jessica Murnane of Suitor and creative dynamo Graham Kostic from video mag Glossedandfound.com on Barkeep!, the perfect holiday gift for the elegant tippler in your life.

All sales from the Barkeep! collection benefit Prescription Well-Being, a volunteer organization providing pampering services to women & children living with cancer. Think facials and makeup application after chemo treatments, massage therapy to help with chronic pain, face-painting parties at Children’s Memorial. Cool, right? PWB is even working toward opening a spa in the Chicago area to provide these services for free. How could we not want to help?

Barkeep! features recipes from some of Glossed & Found’s most well-known guests, who know a thing or two about taste: beauty expert Bobbi Brown, design luminary Kelly Wearstler, Vosges Haut-Chocolat’s Katrina Markoff, and Christina Zilber of Jouer Cosmetics. Recipes are letterpress-printed on Gruppo Cordenons’ luscious new Wild paper, and housed with a handful of vintage swizzle sticks in a foil-stamped, custom diecut Canaletto box.

Buy one, or a bunch, through the end of the year at suitorlife.com. Perfect hostess gift for all the holiday parties coming up. Support, swizzle, sip!

Well folks, no funding on our Kickstarter project this go-round, though there was a nice last-minute surge. Thank you so much for your support. We still want to produce this item, and may repost, or find alternative routes.

It seems our main problem, beside being brand-new to Kickstarter, is timing, since it was hard for many folks (aside from our intrepid backers!) to register a holiday-themed project in late summer/early fall.

If any of you would care to share your thoughts with us, we’d love to hear your ideas. One idea has been to repost during this season, with delivery for holiday 2013. Production timing on this is too long to get funded in November, when people turn their thoughts to holiday, and then deliver this season. What if we did some rewards that would deliver for this season, with the big kahuna to deliver later? Is that something you all might be willing to back?

Thanks again for all your support and comments. We still really want to see this Advent Calendar come to life!

Some of us are HUGE coffee drinkers over here, so we jumped at the chance to imprint coffee bags for the brand-new Tandem Coffee Roasters in Portland, Maine. We’re used to printing on unusual substrates — we’ve done leather, cork, napkins, styrofoam — but needed to do a some testing on this one due to the wires that stick out of the bag to fold over and close.

Took a little machine tweaking, but once we made some feeding adjustments, they printed great. The simple, graphic design by More & Co. translated beautifully to white gloss foil stamping on the kraft brown bags.

Klaus, the little dude in the Rohner Letterpress logo, hasn’t been feeling his robust self lately. He’s been a little sluggish, so he called up Liz Cook from Press & Fold Design for some help. She put him on a weight-loss regimen, give him a (type)facelift, and added a dash of color to his wardrobe, and now he feels as good as new!

In other words, we’ve done a little logo refreshing. We’ve gone from this:

to this:

We’re adding his new look to all our collateral, so we’ll have flashy new business cards soon. You’ll see him pop up more in our communications; he’s turning into a bit of a show-off. His web presence will take a little longer to evolve, but hey, the guy works with 20th-century adaptations of 400-year-old-technology. We’ll cut him a little slack getting up to speed on his virtual presence.

Photos of the new stuff on press in the coming weeks!

We’ve been sitting on this for a while, so we’re excited the cat is finally out of the bag!

Mohawk Paper has announced the winners for Mohawk Show 12, and the Smile poster we produced for London-based design shop Present & Correct has been named winner of the Special Category: Strathmore division. The poster was printed in two color combinations on Strathmore Writing Wove Ultimate White 130# Cover (now part of Mohawk’s new Strathmore Premium line).

There were only four Best of Show winners and four Special Category winners, so we’re in impeccable company here. We’re especially excited since there was no Mohawk Show in 2011, so this entry was selected among two years’ worth of entries.

We love working with Neal from Present & Correct. His witty designs are always at play with color, shape, and elements of eras gone by. His clean aesthetic is a natural fit with letterpress, and we’re always happy to see what P&C is dreaming up next. Congratulations Neal, and thanks for letting us be part of the team.

Check out all the Mohawk Show 12 winners on Mohawk’s Felt & Wire blog. Interviews with the winners will be posted here starting in September, and we’re looking forward to reading them all.

Created for our display at the Unisource Paper Show last month, our new envelope converting promotion tries to simplify the process of quoting a custom envelope. We collaborated with Liz Cook of Press & Fold Design on a proportion wheel trifold to clarify all the pesky details; grain direction, seam & flap options, even flat sheet sizes needed to help with paper calculations. To keep things easy, there’s even a price list on the back for converting the standard sizes included on the wheel (paper, of course, isn’t included).

The piece was printed in four spot colors (3 grays, including a metallic, and an orange) on both sides, diecut and then finished with silver tone eyelets to allow the wheels to move around the center. You just dial in the size you want, and get the info you need.

Serious thanks to Andrew Dembitz at Unisource for including us in the show and giving us the impetus to create this fun piece! We do have some left, so if you’re in the market for small-run custom envelope conversion, shoot us an email.

It’s been a whirlwind summer and fall for us as we prepared and moved into a new space. After 14 years in Ravenswood, we’ve moved about 5 miles southwest to West Humboldt Park.

We’ve taken over a mostly unused warehouse space in the Chicago Press Corp building at Division and Homan Streets. Our new space is about 40% bigger, so of course we’re filling it up with new equipment. Details on that to come!

It’s a more open floor plan, so we were able to think about proper workflow rather than just where something would fit. Being able to actually plan a blank-slate space was both exciting and overwhelming; moving more than 45 tons of equipment, on the other hand, was mostly just overwhelming. We never had a single down day, though; every business day over the whole four-week process, we were printing in one location or the other.

We’re still settling in (what? You mean these boxes won’t unpack themselves?), and the phone/fax situation is still sorting itself out (thanks, AT&T), but we’re awfully proud of the new space and enjoy showing it off….hint hint. And while we do miss our lunchtime walks to Trader Joe’s, we’re discovering all the great food in our new surroundings. Jibaritos, anyone?
